• First of its kind in Charlotte targeted to military veterans
  • Network of partner organizations involved in supporting new tenants
  • Ribbon-cutting celebration held November 10 featuring remarks from Mayor Clodfelter

CHARLOTTE, N.C., November 6, 2015 – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership (DreamKey Partners) is celebrating the opening of its new supportive housing development specifically targeted to low-income military veterans and their families. The apartment community, Tyvola Crossing Phase II, is located in the West Boulevard Corridor and is the only state-funded supportive needs community for veterans in the Charlotte area. It features 20 apartment units, all of which were leased prior to construction completion in August and are currently 100 percent occupied.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there are nearly 9,000 low-income veterans in Charlotte, of which more than 1,000 are at risk for homelessness. Nearly half of the new Tyvola Crossing Phase II tenants were formerly homeless before moving in. The goal of the development is to provide homes for Charlotte veterans whose incomes range from 30-50 percent of the area median income, approximately $14,000 to $23,500 annually.

“These individuals have selflessly served our nation and made sacrifices on our behalf,” said Julie Porter, president of DreamKey Partners. “It is not only an honor but also our duty to ensure they have a safe, affordable place to call home. Through our collaboration with numerous community partners, we are able to provide the necessary resources, services and support these veterans need to achieve independence and long-term success.”

The new Charlotte Veterans Administration (VA) Health Care Center – slated to open in early 2016 – will be one of the largest of its kind in the nation and is conveniently located less than a mile from the apartment community. Tyvola Crossing Phase II is made possible by partnerships with the Veteran’s Administration and local human service agencies and community organizations including Charlotte Family Housing, Community Link, Crisis Assistance Ministries, Urban Ministry Center and Hickory Grove Baptist Church. All offered needed resources and support, such as referring qualified veterans and donating furniture, household items and cleaning supplies.

Financing partners for the development are N.C. Housing Finance Agency Supportive Housing, City of Charlotte, NeighborWorks America and State Employees Credit Union. Development contractors include NarmourWright Architecture, Capstone Civil Group and Quadrant Construction, Inc.

The grand opening celebration will be held the day prior to Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 10, beginning at 2 p.m., at Tyvola Crossing Phase II, 2918 Richard Street (28208). Various staff/board representatives, housing advocates and community leaders will play a role in the dedication program including Julie Porter with DreamKey Partners, Mayor Dan Clodfelter, Kimberly Stephens with Veterans Administration, and Bill Dowse with N.C. Housing Finance Agency. Special guests from the Charlotte Fire Department will present the colors during the ceremony.
